The Gulf Coast Construction Careers Center (G4C) is a pre-apprenticeship pilot project of the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO. The Unions of the AFL-CIO, particularly the building trades unions, provided over a million dollars in seed money to begin a training program in the Gulf Coast after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This program is only one part of a larger response the unions have made in their commitment to help rebuild the affected areas. G4C has since received funding through other sources, including Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money through the Workforce Investment Commission (formerly the Louisiana Workforce Commission). G4C has committed to training over 700 students throughout the next 3 years with the $3 million grant they received. The G4C training program is good for anyone who is interested in a CAREER in construction and wants to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast better and stronger than before. The 4 week program will offer students an opportunity to learn about the different training opportunities the unions have to offer. Students will become CPR and OSHA 10 certified, as well as receive many hours of math remediation in order to be better prepared to pass the required assessment test for the trades. Students who successfully complete the 4 week training program will be a qualified for a $1,600 stipend.
